More Good News About Omega-3

Omega-3 oils also reduce inflammation throughout the body. A study from the University of Florida showed that a combination of omega-3, flavonoids, and vitamin E helped speed the healing process in sore muscles after long runs or intense weight-lifting sessions. In a two-week study, the men who took a supplement of these nutrients had 50 percent less inflammation in their muscles compared to those who took a placebo. The anti-inflammatory effect of omega-3 may also account in part for the decreases in arthritis, asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, and possibly colon, prostate, and breast cancers noted in some studies in people who eat a diet rich in these fats.

A recently published placebo-controlled trial in twenty-seven women with lupus found that omega-3 supplementation significantly improved their symptoms. Lupus is a serious autoimmune disease caused by excessive and inappropriate inflammation throughout the body. Additionally, omega-3 is one of our best therapies for normalizing high triglyceride levels. High-dose omega-3 (two to five grams of EPA + DHA per day) will lower these bad blood lipid levels by 20 to 50 percent and raise the good cholesterol (HDL) level by about 8 percent.

You know why fish are so thin? They eat fish.

Intake offish and omega-3 fats can also help to restore and maintain normal weight. A recent study showed a 7 to 14 percent increase in fat burning during exercise in people who received a fish oil supplement for about three to five weeks. Other studies show that fish consumption improves the level of leptin, a hormone related to appetite. The lean protein in fish also results in improved satiety, leading to fewer cravings for snacks and less overeating.
